Formula and method

Divide both parts by their greatest common divisor. First-part share = a / (a + b) × 100.

Worked example

12:18 simplifies to 2:3; the first part is 40% of the combined total.

What the result assumes

Use nonnegative whole numbers. A 0:0 ratio has no defined share.

Common question

Can one side of a ratio be zero?

Yes, when the other side is positive. For example 0:5 simplifies to 0:1.
