Formula and method

Addition uses (a × d + c × b) / (b × d). The numerator and denominator are reduced by their greatest common divisor.

Worked example

1/2 + 1/3 = 5/6, approximately 0.833333.

What the result assumes

Enter whole-number components. Denominators cannot be zero, and division by a zero fraction is undefined.

Common question

Can I enter negative fractions?

Yes. A negative numerator or denominator represents a negative fraction; the result keeps its sign in the numerator.
