Formula and method

Seconds = file bytes × 8 / (Mbps × 1,000,000 × throughput / 100).

Worked example

A 1 GB file over a 100 Mbps connection takes 80 seconds at 100% effective throughput.

What the result assumes

This is an estimate. Server limits, Wi-Fi conditions, competing traffic, and protocol overhead can reduce effective throughput.

Common question

Why are MB and Mbps different?

MB measures megabytes of data; Mbps measures megabits per second. One byte contains eight bits.
